Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun [FUPRE]

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun (FUPRE), located in Delta State, Nigeria, was established following the approval of the Federal Executive Council on 14 March 2007. The university welcomed its inaugural cohort of undergraduate students in 2008. FUPRE was created as part of a Federal Government initiative aimed at establishing a specialized institution in the Niger Delta region to train professionals and develop expertise for the oil and gas industry.

The National Universities Commission (NUC) sanctioned the shared use of facilities between the Petroleum Training Institute Effurun and the Federal University of Petroleum Resources Effurun until the latter transitioned to its permanent site, which officially commenced operations at Ugbomro, within the Uvwie Local Government Area, in 2010. Notably, FUPRE holds the distinction of being the first petroleum university in Africa.

The Federal University of Petroleum Resources Awards (FUPRA) serve as a testament to the university’s commitment as a research institution to recognize exceptional accomplishments within the upstream, midstream, and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry. By honoring success and dedication to health and safety, environmental stewardship, and corporate social responsibility, these awards are designed to elevate the standards for excellence and promote healthy competition within the sector. The FUPRA highlights that diligent effort is essential for advancement.

The 2021 edition of the FUPRA Awards will feature a diverse array of participants from the oil and gas industry, including representatives from government agencies, upstream, midstream, and downstream companies, regulatory bodies, civil society organizations, financial institutions, and insurance providers. The FUPRA Awards are organized annually by the Federal University of Petroleum Resources in collaboration with the African Child Foundation. This event aims to showcase the significant achievements and activities of industry stakeholders from the previous year, while also providing scholarships to the academically outstanding students in each department of the university.

Selection Process for the FUPRE Awards

The selection process for the FUPRE Awards occurs over a duration of 12 weeks and is divided into several distinct stages.

Nomination Stage:
During this initial stage, questionnaires are distributed to members of the university community, inviting them to nominate candidates of their choice across various categories. Nominations are permitted for individuals or organizations, with a restriction of up to three categories per nominee.

Collation Stage:
This phase involves compiling the total number of nominations for each category. The two individuals or institutions receiving the highest number of nominations are subsequently qualified to advance to the final stage.

Second Questionnaire Stage:
In this stage, questionnaires are issued to members of the academic community to assess the character, reputation, and overall performances of the finalists selected in the previous stage.

Examination of Questionnaires:
Responses from the public, gathered during this stage, are analyzed to produce a tentative final result, ensuring impartiality in the evaluation process.

Interview Stage:
This stage culminates the selection process and incorporates media interviews of the finalists.

The Event:
The awards ceremony features the presentation of honors to the winners, which elicits admiration from all attendees as well as the viewing audience on television. Confirmation letters outlining the terms of the event will be sent exclusively to the winners. Only those awardees who have adhered to the stipulated terms will be granted access to the venue.

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Rim-Rukeh Akpofure

Professor Rim-Rukeh Akpofure, prior to his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, held the position of Professor of Microbial Corrosion and Environmental Studies at the University.

He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Biochemistry from the University of Port Harcourt in 1986. In 2004, he completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Education at Delta State University, Abraka. Additionally, he obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Chemistry from the University of Benin in 1993, followed by a Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Port Harcourt in 1998.

He concluded his academic pursuits by earning a PhD in Chemical Engineering from Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, in 2008.
